Why Do We Believe the Casino is Bad for Our Region?

The Foundation

On a foundational level, the development of a casino near Moorhead is inconsistent with a biblical worldview. See more details in our blog post titled:    A Biblical Worldview.

Statistics also Show increased rates of divorce, addiction, child abuse, and suicide.

The Economy

When a casino is built in a city like Moorhead with a low unemployment rate, and a generally healthy economy the economic benefits are often outweighed by the negative economic costs. Money spent at the casino is money that would otherwise have been spent elsewhere in our community. It is a transfer of money, not new money. It cannibalizes discretionary income.

These negative economic costs include loss of tax base, increased costs for roads, utilities, law enforcement, emergency services, mental health and addiction services. In addition, there is often increased crime associated with gambling addiction, divorce, child neglect, suicide, and human trafficking. See more on our resource pages and in the Blog Posts.

The Environment

The Buffalo River Aquifer, which is very near this site, provides drinking water to many Clay County residents. In the 1990s, two truck stops closed due to risks of fuel leaks contaminating soil and water. Others have been denied building permit requests due to risks to the aquifer. The casino could  put a strain on this resource.

The aquifer must be protected. It remains an ecological concern.
